We are John and Ashley, a homesteading couple located in beautiful Pend Orielle County, WA. We moved to our 21 acre property in 2020, with the goal of pursuing self sufficiency.
John is originally from the Midwest, where he grew up on his grandfather's Jersey dairy farm. The farm had been in the family for generations, and he has fond memories of working with the cows and showing them under the family name. He remembers the hard work that his grandfather put into making sure each cow was healthy and cared for, and the planning that went into improving the herd through a thoughtful breeding program. Unfortunately, not enough of the next generation was interested in continuing the dairy, and they could no longer compete with the large commercial farms. The herd was sold off. John always knew he would return to farming someday. He still swears that Jersey milk is the best.
Ashley is originally from the Southwest. She moved around a lot growing up, so to her, home was not a place, but wherever her family was. There was always one special place to her though, and that was her grandparents farm. Her grandpa, a retired sailor, is a hardworking DIYer with a love for animals. He raised dairy goats and mules, and let her and her brothers keep various pets on his farm. Ashley had no idea that she would end up on a farm, but is so glad that she did. She thinks Nubian milk is the best.
